Welcome to the Greenway Equestrians Site

Our purpose is to keep equestrians who use the 110-mile Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway informed and involved. Stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the St. Johns River, the Greenway occupies much of the land formerly known as the Cross Florida Barge Canal. This corridor of public land has been set aside for conservation and recreation purposes. Equestrians have developed over 60 miles of trails within this multi-use trail corridor, including some of Florida’s premier equestrian trails. At this time we are concentrating only on the sections of Greenway crossing Marion County, Florida. Please visit the Greenways and Trails Website for more information.

An Important Notice from OGT

This notice was sent February 6th.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to send out a mass e-mail to all equestrian groups to let you know that as of Feb 29th Shangri La will be closed down to over night camping. We will be posting up signs so that visitors/users know that we do not allow over night camping but it is still open up to day use. This is what we are posting:

“Starting February 29th, 2008 this area will be temporarily closed to overnight camping in order to build the facilities necessary to comply with Department of Health requirements for campgrounds. Florida Statue 513-Florida Administrative Code 64E-15. We will open to overnight camping when new facilities are constructed. The Department of Environmental Protection and Office of Greenways and Trails thank you for your cooperation.”

I understand that this place is loved by all equestrians and it has been a favorite among many of you, but we need your help with getting the word out, and informing people that we do plan on making this a campground but it will take time. We will also post our phone number so people will be able to contact us. If you could help us by posting this on your web page so that people who are planning on camping will look into other places that are available that would be a tremendous help.

Happy Trails,
Bre Ximenes

The existence of the Greenway Equestrians will hopefully provide opportunities for greenways and trails advocates, managers, planners, users, conservationists, private landowners, and tourism and business interests to come together to support the Greenways for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.
