Description: The 49th Ave. Trailhead has room for about 4 or 5 single or double horse trailers only. It also makes a great rest/picnic break for those riding to it from the Landbridge and Shangri-La Trailheads. The 49th Ave. Trailhead has a picnic pavilion, hitching posts, horse water and trough as well as port-o-potties – there is no potable water.
The Christmas section of the Greenway contains about 6.5 miles of singletrack horseback riding trails as well as about 2 miles of the multi-use limerock road which is suitable for riding or driving if your horses have shoes. It connects to the Land Bridge over I-75 (see description in the Land Bridge Trails section.)
Diggings resulting from the historic ship canal make for some challenging terrain – expect at least a mile of short but steep sandy ups and downs on each singletrack trail. Trail 1 follows the northern edge of the south berm and is the easiest, most direct singletrack route from the 49th Ave Trailhead to the Land Bridge. Trail 2 is the longest and most varied option, including old 4 wheeler trails, firelines, tight singletrack through the diggings, and trail through sandy pine flatwoods. Trail 3 runs along the top of the diggings and contains the most challenging terrain. (As of 9/5/06 trail 3 is closed due to down trees - we will try to get this open asap and keep trail users informed as to the status.) There is a large tunnel under 49th Ave. at the western end of this section which connects the trails to the Shangri La section.
