Description: The Shangri La Trailhead has a large parking area with picnic tables, fire rings, several corrals, horse water and troughs as well as port-o-potties – there is no potable water. This trailhead is intended solely for equestrians – there are no hiking or biking trails connected to it.
The Shangri La section of the Greenway contains about 12 miles of horseback riding trails as well as about 3.5 miles of the multi-use limerock road which is suitable for riding or driving if your horses have shoes. Diggings resulting from the historic ship canal make for some challenging terrain – expect short but steep sandy ups and downs with some exposed limerock in the hill trails. We have recently resigned trails in this area, designating a short hill loop (blue), a long hill loop (red) and a wagon accessible loop (will be marked green, we need to fix a nasty horse swallowing mudhole before we sign it!) The yellow through trail travels about 4 miles through the Shangri La section from the tunnel under 49th Ave to the road crossing at CR484. There is a short alternate yellow trail in a section of hills near 49th Ave.
